Ambulance Theft
What can be done to prevent Ambulance theft of unattended running vehicles?
Do nothing, it will never happen again
Lock the ambulance and carry a spare set of keys to re-enter running vehicle
Invest in commercial device enabling the vehicle to be left running while the keys are removed from the vehicle. Preventing the vehicle from being operated until the keys are returned to the ignition

September 8, 2008 - 1900

  • All Bucks County Teams have reported in and are back home.

September 7, 2008 - 0430 cst

  • all units up and moving all units on the road around 0510. Teams handle 35 mission for the state strike.

September 6, 2008 - 0900

PA DOH Report:

  • All are well fed and sheltered. Hospice patients were moved. A Catholic church is providing lunch for the EMTs. Everyone is healthy.
  • At one point 50 ambulances were on the road simultaneously. At least 50 patients were transported and assistance was provided for others. There was one vehicle issue. Otherwise, all was well throughout the night.
  • A slight vehicle accident with minor damages occurred to two vehicles when another vehicle pulled out in front of several of them. One ambulance went into the back of another. There were no injuries. The patients being transported had no issues.
  • Return to Pennsylvania…Travel Day 1, 9/7/08: convoys of 15 to 20 vehicles will begin moving at 0600 with the command staff departing last at 0900 en route to Knoxville TN and Jackson MS (staying in 5 different hotels). All teams should be in Pennsylvania no later than midnight 9/8/08. DOH EMS will confer with the councils to verify that everyone has returned. Contact will be made with PEMA to close the loop on verification of return. 260 personnel are deployed. 66 vehicles are deployed.

September 5, 2008 - 1215 cst

  • Teams went back to FEMA site to assist. Crews worked all night at LSU moving pts.
  • The catholic church put on a spread for all the teams for cleaning up the church for the storm damage .
  • Will being to break down base camp tonight in preparation for departing.

September 5, 2008 - 1215 cst

  • Night crews dispatched to LSU 5 units went down 125,143,108,1854,1857 to help with the dmat in moving pt. Crew are schudle to work 12 hrs. 

September 5, 2008 - 1300 cst

  • In 1 hour buck montco and zachary fire dept loaded 2000 tarps, 32 tons of ice ,9106 MRE

September 5, 2008 - 1005 cst

  • Fire chief of Zachary ask for some help from Bucks and Montco.
  • FEMA arrived with supplies for the town all 9 units went to help off load and give supplies to the town people that have been helping us.

September 5, 2008 - 0930 cst

  • Teams return from LSU after working all night. All Bucks units are back in the rotation.
  • The crews are still staged at the 1st Baptist Church in Zachary Louisiana.  There are 14 crews working 12 hour shifts in two locations in Baton Rouge Louisiana.
  • Tom McElree is in charge of the Demobilization Plan.  The crews will depart on Sunday September 7, 2008.  All crews will be back in Pennsylvania on Monday September 8, 2008.

September 4, 2008 - 1900 cst

  • Teams at 1700 were sent to LSU main campus to assist with a DMAT team.
  • The units were 108,125,143,1854.
  • Teams will be working with a 12hr shift thru the night.
  • 1857 has a 0600 transport from Lane memorial to Baton rouge airport.

September 3, 3008

  • Teams sent out on long transport were recall any return around 0000. No other mission came up thru the night. Teams are set up Montco and Bucks are bunk together. Teams prepare for another.
  • Since noon yesterday the crews completed 26 missions.

September 2, 2008 - 1900 cst

  • 1900 hrs teams were asked to give a status report of avaible units. Bucks teams had 5 units avaible. Ops asked for 3 units. Mission assigned to 125,143,185-1, they left 15 min later for Leesville LA. 200 miles away then they will transport to Sulphar LA. Which is 70 miles away and return. Total trip will be close to 420 miles. Its going to be a long night for these crews.

September 3, 2008 - 1430 cst

  • Teams will finally have a base of operations sound like a church in town of zachary . In which the mayor  has herd what was going on and made things happen. Teams have been pretty much adopted by the city.
  • Other wise today teams today trying to get them self together the night rolled in around 0500 from moving the hospital.
  • The 143 crew offer to handled a vent run this morning with 4 other units form PA  strike teams .

September 3, 2008 - 0130 cst

  • Teams continued to Zachary La. Lane Regional Medical Center. Teams arrived in Zachry, La and off loaded there equipment.
  • Teams  started transporting pt out to local medical centers some Bucks units had transport as long  four hour transport down  to New Orleans La. Shelter
  • evacuated 54 patients to surrounding hospitals. The crews then occupied the hospital for beds and showers.
  • They are working on a plan to move the crews to a Baptist church facility when the hospital is ready for repopulation. An advance team has gone to the facility to coordinate the logistics. The command team is working on staffing assignments for 12 hour shifts.

September 2, ,2008

  • Teams arrived at a fuel depot in Baton Rouge all 60 pa teams fueled.
  • The crews arrived at 2000 hours on 09/02/2008 at the Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary Louisiana

September 1, ,2008 - 0830 cst

  • The team has been move to a hurricane proof shelter in Alexandria, La. Half of the shelter is a hospital in which the teams will be assisting if necessary. The main order for the next day or two is rest
  • Teams have been told they will be back to full operation once the storm has past.

August 30, 2008 - 1730 cst

  • Teams are returning from long distance transport in preparation for EVAC of tent city. Some teams spend 8+hrs with vent dependent pt .  Transferring pt to flights out of local airports. Team are awaiting EVAC location .Operational period for today for some teams  still in the field could potential work up until midnight.

August 30, 2008 - 0730 cst

  • Teams deployed tents and  est. shelter all supplies  stored.  All medic units inspected by LA DOH and passed. 4 Bucks  medic units  deployed at 0230 for New Orleans under police escort for a 6 hour round trip doing evacuations. Day will bring all new jobs. All medic units will be working. The deployment at this site will be tonight in which we will be told to big out or hang in. The ALS Team leaders from Bucks and MontCo will be rotating 12 hr shifts as supervisors.

August 3, 2008 - 2100 cst

Teams told to bypass Jackson, MI meeting with the rest of PA Teams and proceed directly to Alexandria, LA

August 29, 2008 - 2130

  • Per Team Leader Armstrong -
    "As of 2130 all teams from bucks have left for louisiana"

August 29, 2008 -

  • 5 ambulances are being deployed from Bucks County with 4 providers for each ambulance to maintain 24/7 ALS service. There is also 1 ALS Team Leader for all Bucks County Ambulances to report to this, Team Leader will be part of the command structure.
  • The teams are currently at Montgomery County EOC for a rally point to consolidate equipment on a support unit and meet up with units from MontCo and Chester Counties
  • The current mission contracted for will have the teams staging in alexandria, LA.The units are required to be self sufficient for 72hrs. The units will be given specific missions focused on evacuations (HOPS, special needs patients, etc). When the hurricane approaches land the units will return to staging area. After conditions are safe the situation and needs of Louisiana will be re-evaluated and missions re-assigned as needed.

    Bensalem EMS - 2 units
    Bucks County Rescue Squad - 1 unit
    Central Bucks Ambulance - 1 unit
    St. Luke's Ambulance - 1 unit
